Campaign succeeds in countering unfair Egyptians’ claim
Arabic Language digital campaign has scored a notable result in countering unfair claim of Egyptians sent out to the Arab community, so disclosed Ethio-Dream Campaign Team.
The Ethio-Dream Team of Social Media Campaign for GERD Leader Sultan Abagissa told The Ethiopian Herald that the organized campaign has been successful in countering the wrong narrative Egypt has been fabricating regarding the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD) with intention of confusing the Arab community.
Egypt has been turning a blind eye and deaf ear to the Ethiopia’s demand for electric power supply and presents the project as if it is meant to harm the interest of the downstream countries by ignoring the remarkable economic significance of the dam for the countries.
The campaign played a significant role in clarifying the falsehood fabrication Egyptian activists and lobbyists propagating overlooking Ethiopia’s genuine request for equitable and reasonable utilization of the water resource.
The members have set up a platform which can potentially provide campaigners with reliable information. It releases the factsheets through the social media platforms such as Tweeter, Facebook, What-Sapp, and Telegram to address thousands of millions of followers at a time.
The team sends out firsthand information about the condition, sustainability, safety and significance of the project and wins a number of diplomatic engagements as it has been tactful and a knowledge-based one, he noted.
Sultan said, “Ethiopians have no intention of harming Egyptian brothers and sisters, apart from requesting their country’s share of the water as the country contributes 86 percent of Nile water.”
Egyptians claim the historic right over the water, whereas Ethiopia has time and again stated that it has the right to recycle the resource for generating electricity power without causing harm to the basin as it contributes 86 percent of the water.
The team is working to institutionalize itself so as to carry out the campaign in a systematic and well-structured manner. The team has over 6 hundred members in over 40 social media groups with over 3 million followers.
He uncovered that about 98 percent of the communication in the group is handled in Arabic Language whereas the rest 2 percent would be in English targeting at well informing the western community.
Egyptian and Sudanese scholars themselves have been attesting the diplomatic success Ethiopian has been scoring over Egyptians regarding the GERD, it was learnt.
Sultan ultimately made a call to all Ethiopians to actively participate in the media campaign by sharing the messages through social media; hence, universities, colleges and institutions need to engage in the campaign specially the tweeter
