ADDIS ABABA- During the past five months, fellow citizens have contributed 790 million Birr to the construction of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the Office of the National Council for the Coordination of Public Participation to the Construction of GERD announced.
The office Public Relations and Media Communication Director Hailu Abraham told The Ethiopian Herald that the general public are so zealous to see swift completion of the dam following the successful initial water filling of the dam and they are buying more GERD bonds now.
He indicated that 14.3 billion Birr has been so far collected from the public since the beginning of the construction of the dam.
As to Hailu, the office has been using various fundraising platforms to enhance public participation and so these platforms have been enabling the office to collect the needed money.
“For instance, 83 million Birr had been collected exclusively via 8100 A mobile SMS alternative during the past nine months.”
The public could have contributed over the aforementioned money, if COVID-19 did not exist, he said, adding that the current good performance of the construction of the dam is the main factor that is boosting the public participation in the construction of the dam.
Hailu said that the public in particular and the private sectors, financial institutions, and the Diaspora community in general have been playing a vital role in the construction of the dam.
